Single system research designs (SSRDs) were introduced into social work in the late 1960s, and since that time they have been successfully applied across a wide array of practice fields, micro through macro. These designs are a practical way for social workers to empirically determine if their clients have improved following receipt of social work intervention, and in  some cases it is possible to credibly determine if social work caused any observed improvements. This workshop will provide an overview of the different types of single system designs, ranging from the very simple to the more complex, illustrating the use of each with actual examples that have appeared in the published literature. SSRDs are an excellent way to ‘begin where the client is at’, and to fulfill our professional ethical mandate to empirically evaluate practice outcomes. This workshop will provide the audience with an accurate presentation of the five-step process model of EBP, and contrast it with less sophisticated approaches, illustrating how EBP includes not just a consideration of research evidence, but also client preferences and values, pragmatic concerns, clinical expertise, available resources, and professional ethics. Practitioners will be shown how to efficiently locate current ‘best evidence’ that can inform clinical decision-making, and given some guidelines on how to critically evaluate that evidence. Kimberli Breen, the Technical Assistance Director for the Illinois Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (IL-PBIS) Network, provides leadership, training and technical assistance regarding the implementation of behavioral response to intervention (RTI) at the national, state and district-levels. She assumes the role of Project Manager for several federal and state-level projects, including the federal Kansas-Illinois Tier 2/Tier 3 Demonstration, District-wide Tier 2/Tier 3 Replication, National PBIS Technical Assistance Center Demonstration, Community-wide PBIS implementation project and the School/Family/Community Partnerships Pilot.
