
Thirty-four volunteers from five Rochester companies donated more than 125 hours working at four Hillside sites during the United Way Day of Caring in May. Volunteers from PAETEC and Thomson Reuters mulched the entire Crestwood Children’s Center campus in Scottsville. "It normally takes staff two full days to do that mulching," says Volunteer Coordinator Heather VanDyne.A group from Harris Interactive prepared Camp Possibilities for the summer season by cleaning out the barn, organizing gear, and cleaning up the trails. According to Recreation Therapy Manager Claudia Herman, "We had a great day at Camp! The volunteers were outstanding. We couldn’t have asked for a better group."
Volunteers from Wegmans once again launched the Season of Caring program at the Lehigh group home by preparing the garden and greenhouse for planting. Painter Frank Mobilio and his crew used paint to turn a room in the Horton building on Hillside Children’s Center’s (HCC) Monroe Avenue campus into a dual-purpose family meeting and play space.
Twenty volunteers from the St. John Fisher School of Pharmacy marked their own Day of Caring event in April by painting bedrooms and hallways in Bausch and Cook cottages on the HCC Monroe Avenue campus.
"Not only do the volunteers save a tremendous amount of time for our staff," Heather says, "they make a huge difference for our youth. Hillside is home for these kids for months, so making the building and grounds more beautiful is very important. We’re so grateful for their support."
